Show Me

The phone, explained out loud.

A blue button sits on the edge of the screen, on top of every app. Press it and Show Me says what the screen is and what to do next, in plain words.

Ask it a question out loud and it answers. Say yes and it presses the button for you.

Android phones. Built and tested on Samsung.

Not on the Play Store yet

Show Me is being tested with real families before it goes any further. If you look after a parent or grandparent who finds their phone hard, and you want to try it on their phone, say so and we will send it to you.

What it does

1

Explains the screen. Not every word on it, the way a screen reader would. What the screen is, and the next thing to tap.

2

Answers the question you actually asked. Out loud, in ordinary words. "What is this?" "How do I get back?" "Where did my photos go?"

3

Does it for you, once you say yes. Opens an app you name. Writes a text and reads it back before sending. Rings someone in your contacts, after asking.

4

Makes the phone itself simpler. On Samsung phones it can switch on the big-button home screen, and put it back exactly as it was whenever you ask.

It asks before it acts

Nothing is sent without you hearing it

It reads a message back to you and presses send only if you say yes.

No numbers dialled from thin air

Say a phone number and it types it in for you. You press call.

Nothing on a locked phone

Someone holding your locked phone cannot use it to call, text or read anything.

Passwords are invisible to it

Password boxes are skipped entirely, and it never sends what you typed into a box.

What it does with what it sees

To explain a screen, the words on that screen go to Google's Gemini service, which sends back the explanation. That is the whole of it.

No account, nothing kept

There is nothing to sign up for. A small relay of ours passes your question on to Google and keeps only a daily count, never what was on your screen. Uninstalling deletes everything on the phone.

No ads, no tracking

None, of any kind. Nothing is sold, and there is nobody to sell it to.

Photos are never looked at

It reads the words a screen is built from, not the picture on it.

Contacts stay put

Looked up on the phone when you say "text Dad", and never sent anywhere.

The full privacy policy says all of it in plain words, and every line of it was checked against what the app actually does.

Who it is for

"You drive across town to press one button on your mother's phone."

That is the problem this was built for.

Show Me is for someone who can see the screen perfectly well and does not understand what it is asking. It is set up once, in about a minute, and then it works when nobody else is in the room.

What it costs

Free while it is being tested. Afterwards $4.99 a month, or $9.99 a month with no limits. Nothing is ever charged without agreeing to it first.

What it cannot do

It cannot read pages inside a web browser yet. It can be wrong, like any assistant, which is why it asks before it acts. It is not a way to tell whether a message or a caller is a scam, and it is not for emergencies. Call 911 yourself.
